Risk Engineer / Senior Risk Engineer

Position Summary:

Under limited supervision, the Senior Risk Engineer – Energy/Construction/Heavy Industry provides comprehensive risk assessment and insurance risk engineering/loss control services in accordance with Liberty’s Risk Services’ engineering and risk control technical standards for both First & Third Party lines. Serves as a technical expert, providing information, recommendations and risk evaluations as required. Develops technical content including white papers, resources and training materials for underwriting, risk services/engineering, claims, brokers and client’s partners. Maintains effective partnerships with Underwriting, Claims and Risk Services/ Risk Engineering / Risk Control Global partners. Acts as a Company representative at client/broker and other events/meetings as directed by manager. Serves as a trainer/mentor to peers and/or less experienced consultants and underwriters in their specialty area at the discretion of their manager. Actively participates in acquiring and retaining profitable business including business development and marketing activities for assigned lines of business(s). This is a senior role within LMC and the right candidate is expected to ensure that the high standards of risk services/engineering are promoted and maintained.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Champion and model our Liberty values and Guidelines for Inclusion to drive market leading culture and ensure positive employee engagement.
  • Assumes ownership for allocated and prospect accounts in Energy, Construction, Renewables and Heavy Industry Property – First Party lines, as well any assigned or requested Commercial Property and Casualty – Third Party lines, including attendance on surveys, follow-up of key recommendations and ensuring that risk services / engineering information on file is up to date.
    • Interprets and analyzes data to determine best course of action and/ or solution (s) that stratify customers’ loss prevention needs.
    • Organizes, prepare and presents reports that outlines outcome-based action plans for improved practices as well as influence positive customer support of recommended solution(s).
    • Provides technical input on claims including the review of claims reports and site visits to identify areas for claims mitigation and recommendations for improvement.
  • Plans, organizes and performs desk-based risk appraisals and onsite risk services/engineering surveys for existing and prospective clients, as required by Underwriters. Provides overflow Third Party multiline survey capacity, as needed.
  • Enhances Liberty Mutual’s leadership position in the field and increases brand awareness through potential speaking engagements at conferences, developing a network of contacts and supporting development of industry resources including but not limited to Industry position papers, discussion boards, newsletters, technical references, and other consulting resources. Responsible for promoting knowledge sharing and communication of risk services / engineering and technology related issues for their assigned line of business(s).
  • Maintains an up-to-date knowledge of the assigned lines of business(s) including process technology, loss prevention, and other related issues that may impact the underwriting decision-making process or LMC profitability. Provides expert technical support to the Risk Services and Underwriting teams by advising them about resources available, legislation and applicable regulations, technology, industry trends and effective methods to reduce risk, improve customer satisfaction and demonstrate the value of doing business with Liberty Mutual. Organizes data into a format which can easily be presented to customer. Prepares and presents reports which outline action plan for improved practices and/or recommendations.
  • Maintains effective partnerships with customers. Learns about customer’s business in order to identify risk management objectives and needs. Ensures accurate and concise communication and mutual understanding with internal and external customers. Keeps customers informed of status of services, support material available and outside resources relevant to identify customers’ concerns.
  • Collaborates with management in developing policies, procedures, service tools, technical resources, techniques and new products in order to support and enhance the delivery of them
  • Maintains professional credibility and consistently demonstrates technical expertise and sound judgment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 7 years’ experience in Property/Energy Risk Control, Loss Control/Prevention and/or Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science or equivalent degree with coursework in math, engineering or related areas (or equivalent). Advanced degree and/or Technical or Business related Master’s degree, an asset but not required.
  • Licensed Canadian Professional Engineer.
  • Additional professional certification in one or more of the following areas: NFPA-CFPS, UL-CRE, ARM, CRM, CPCU, or CPE are considered an asset
  • Knowledge, skills, and experience in Property Engineering / Loss Control, Fire Protection, HPR – Highly Protected Risks and/or specialized industry such as mining, Power Generation, Oil & Petrochemical, Renewables, Construction, etc., Building and Fire Codes such as NBC, NFC, NFPA and other industry recognized standards and codes.
  • Fully effective interpersonal, writing and other communication skills required to develop and maintain relationships with customers, peers, and industry contacts.
  • Strong work ethic with focus on attention to detail, commitment to quality work and Time Management.
  • Position requires regular overnight travel
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Fluent in French is considered an asset
  • Approximate travel required 50%
