Underwriter, Fronting

Reports To: Manager, Fronting

Position Summary:

The primary focus of this role will be underwriting, maintaining and growing an assigned portfolio of Fronting (Captive & Self-Insured Retention) business. This role will work on a variety of Casualty and Specialty products with a key focus on Property, General Liability, and Financial Lines. In addition to underwriting a portfolio, this role will support evaluating credit risk and collateral required with our counterparties.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for assigned tasks with respect to the production and underwriting of an assigned book of business, including analysis of risk, negotiation of policy terms & conditions, fees, and collateral (amount and form), to ensure appropriate profitability and consistency with Liberty Mutual Canada’s corporate strategy.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with brokers & clients.
  • Demonstrates effective prioritization of workload and provides market-leading customer service while keeping management abreast of service-related issues and providing recommendations to address short-falls.
  • Continually develops and expands expertise in underwriting, risk analysis, financial statement review and collateral assessment.
  • Coordinate with other underwriting groups, finance, reinsurance and claims departments across the Liberty Mutual Group, as necessary, to ensure appropriate understanding of any fronted risk and policy form compliance.
  • Perform related duties, presentations, special projects and assignments to assist in ensuring the success of Fronting.
  • Update and maintain various logs and prepare reports as required.
  • Represents Liberty at various industry and association events and meetings, as appropriate.
  • Other duties as may be assigned

Skills & Qualifications:

  • University degree or equivalent is required.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of insurance industry experience in broking or underwriting.
  • Self-starter with strong analytical skills, in addition to strong business and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong market and broker relationships is an asset.
  • Experience in review and analysis of financial statements is an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Relevant insurance designations and education is an asset.
